The associative montage feeds from many different sources. In the mid-20th century, the sceneries of feature films, industrial films, documentaries and commercials evoke the oil boom and its promises. But starting in the early seventies, after mounting environmental catastrophes, geopolitical conflicts, and oil embargoes, eschatological images full of nihilism increasingly appear as well. In Fountain, this ambivalent imagery flows like gushing oil from the depths of the earth: seductive and poisoning.
